1327--Seth Visits21 Jun, 2009 | Posted by: person63

So I will have to make this entry short (sorry). Tomorrow I leave for India and there is a lot to do before I go to bed tonight. Last week Seth visited me and we went on a 40km trek from Naantali (another small town) back to Turku via Raisio (the area where the big cruise ships are manufactured). It took about 4 hours to do this trek, because we got sidetracked but it went by fast because we were able to keep each other entertained throughout the entire trip. The good news about Finland is that the cities are all connected by walking/biking paths next to the highways. So we were able to take this back to Turku after taking the bus to Naantali (all this walking to save nine Euro?).

The next day we were sore but we still managed to go to the Turku Marina, where there are a lot of old boats, and the Turku Castle. This was Seth's first time in a castle and according to the picture, you can tell that he enjoyed it. Overall the weather was much worse that day, since it was colder and kind of rainy.

Seth also took me out for my birthday and cider, which was a great way to spend my 22nd birthday. In addition to that I took him with my work's excursion on the Vikingline picnic cruise that has a boat go to Åland and then you transfer onto another boat that takes you back the way you came. He hadn't been on a boat that big before, but he said he enjoyed that too.

Sending him off was rough since I realized that I have spent a lot of time here but I am still not that settled. It also made me realize that I am about half done with my assignment here (already), but there is still a long way to go. I think having him as a visitor also made me a little homesick since he did bring many of the comforts of home with him that I have put in the back of my mind. But most importantly he had a great time here in Finland and I had a great time hosting him.

I love visitors!

1326--The Magic of a Finnish Summer Cottage20 Jun, 2009 | Posted by: person63

Summer cottages are the pride of many Finns. They will take off the entire month in order to spend some time at their second homes that are near the sea, lake, or in the middle of the countryside. These cottages are typically very modest, although lately some cottages are being installed with running water or kitchen appliances (like dishwashers). Anne-Lena from the laboratory brought me out for an afternoon at her family's cottage in order to see what the life at a Finnish cottage is like. Only one word comes to mind--magical. If I have to give a second word, I would say beautiful. The pictures are posted on the main site. (read more)

Since some people have been asking...

The simple story:

I am testing the ability of a membrane to be used in selective water purification. If successful this work can be brought to large scale use by only eliminating certain molecules from water, while allowing others to be transferred.

The more complicated version:

1324--Bad weather07 Jun, 2009 | Posted by: person63

So this week really had nothing major go on. The weather was pretty awful all week (and even extended into the weekend a little bit. It was in the low forties with rain and the famous Nordic wind that never is warm. I took the bus a lot this week because it was just too cold to walk. However the weather today makes it almost impossible to believe that just yesterday no one wanted to be outside that long (until the end of the day).

So Anne-Leena, the lab's secretary, invited me out to her summer cottage for the day. I am going to visit her family there and see how life in the cottage is. Fortunately the weather improved a lot, so it's now that big of a stretch to enjoy the day outside. Right now it's about 46, but the sun should be out all day. I don't know what the high is because I have learned that the weather here is extremely unpredictable. You can go to all the different weather websites and get 15 different forecasts and not one will be close. So the weathermen are just guidelines, then subtract about 10 degrees. I blame the Nordic winds.

*Temperatures are measured in Fahrenheit. In Celsius, the temperatures would be 5-7 degrees, 6 degrees, and then 2 degrees.
